The UMM - Universal Mic Mount

Everything to know about the 'UMM'

Key Handling Noise Improvement

Key Unique Selling Points

  • Removes and heavily reduces all major handling noise and vibrations compared to the original Sony OEM microphone mount, including when used with an Easy Rig quick-release ball attachment.
  • Flight-ready in 5 seconds, with a fully removable toolless design allowing the removal of the mic mount entirely > but still works with the original OEM screws if preferred.
  • Supported both Rycote and Radius RAD/Lyres, and expanding.
  • New V4 UMM System supports all Rycote and Radius Lyres within a single mount, including interchangeability between Nanos.
  • New V4 supports multiple spacing for short mics and the longest mics in a single mount.
  • Optional Angles: Both 30° and 0° based on your needs
  • New V4 supports Individual slots to let you push the microphone further back to avoid creeping into the shot, and keep the length of the camera shorter for packing with even the longest of mics.
  • It’s non-destructive and 100% reversible.
  • Designed to snap first under sudden impact, to reduce the risk of snapping plastic from your top handle.
  • Can be swapped and changed to different Radius and or Rycote shockmounts based on your needs and circumstances.

Legend

  • UMM - Stands for Universal Mic Mount. This is the 3D printed Base Mount that attaches to your camera.
  • RNR - Stands for Rycote Nano Rail and this integrates into the compatible UMM's to then support Rycote Nanos.
  • The Shockmount, also known as the Lyre/RAD - this is the actual shock mount that then mounts to our UMM.

Short Explanation

1. Tools, Removal, and Installation.

2. Pick your camera, Fx6, Fx3, etc.

    3. Pick your Shockmount/Lyre - Best Picks Below

All Shockmounrs produce relatively identical results.

🥇 Rycote Duos - Toughest Choice

The toughest and most fool-proof offering, supporting the biggest mics with the largest wind protection.

Our Notes: Use a higher Shore strength when running a 30° or 0° degree option. We almost always recommend the 72 as it acts like an 82 in strength.

The Duos is the only configuration we recommend when using mics like the MKH416 Rycote Super Softie, which has a pretty huge windshield.

    • Compatible with nearly every mic on the market, from the MKH 416 to even ultra-short shotgun mics and square body mics like the MKH50.
    • Supports XLR and 3.5mm jack (Check mic spacing for 3.5mm)
    • Support larger windcovers and can easily support our Anti-O-Sag Rings to reduce sagging.
    • Diameter of mic Support mics from 19/34mm in diameter, and will work as long as you have 61mm of free space on your mic, but this can also include the added length of your XLR Cable.

🥇Radius RAD-2 - Most Flexible and visually unique

Most Versatile Option with incredible performance.

Our Notes: Use a higher Shore strength when running a 30° or 0° degree option. We almost always recommend the 82D/Extra Firm option.

    • Compatible with nearly every mic on the market, from the MKH 416 to even ultra-short shotgun mics and square body mics like the MKH50
    • Diameter of mic Support from 8mm, 12.5mm, 19-25mm.

🥇Rycote Nanos - Lowest Profile Option

If headroom and height is your biggest concern, then these are the lowest profile options.

Our Notes: Use a higher Shore strength when running a 30° or 0° degree option. We almost always recommend the 72 and size up, as even my Deity s-mic 2s were 19mm in diameter, but the 19/21mm was still a really tight fit.

From Testing the Nano Shore 72 held up great with a Deity S-Mic2s with a Bubblebee Industries spacer bubble.

    • Compatible with nearly every mic on the market, from the MKH 416 to even ultra-short shotgun mics and square body mics like the MKH50
    • Stiff and don't sag much by their design.
    • Diameter of mic Support from 19/21mm and 22/25mm (We recommend sizing up)
    • Super-heavy Windjammers may not be as effective and cause sagging.

    4. Pick your Shockmount > Strength

We almost always recommend the highest strength option to reduce sagging, and compare that with our Anti-O-Sag Lyre rubber rings.

    5. Pick Your UMM Mount

40mm of spacing between each lyre, this is based off Radius and Rycotes most commonly used spacing for almost all mics.

    • UMM3 offers 3 mounting spots and is our shortest at 58mm
      • UMM3 is compatible with all bodies: FX3, FX2, FX6, FX9, FS7, Z300, Z280 and hundreds more.
    • UMM4 offers 4 mounting spots and is our most normal and versatile size at 82mm
      • UMM4 is NOT compatible with FX3, FX2, FX30 Handles
    • RNR4 is compatible with the UMM4 and allows the use of Rycote Nanos on the UMM4

    6. Pick your Angle

    30° - Angle

    • Obstructs XLR Releases, will require a small tool to help hit the latches.
    • Lowers the mic, Smaller Profile for packing like the OEM Stock mic mount.
    • Less interference with onboard 5" and 7" monitors, with certain setups can support full tilt monitors.
    • Causes heavier mics to SAG more, so will require little Lyre O-Ring rubber supports.

    0° - Angle

    • Will not obstruct XLR Releases.
    • Slightly Higher mic than usual.
    • Less mic/lyre SAG with heavier mics, can still require little Lyre O-Ring rubber supports.

Deep Dive into our Lyre/Shockmount Choice

      Rycote Brand

      RYCOTE - Amber Tech

Rycote Duo Lyres - Most Popular

      Shore Strength

      • 62 shore (Soft) Black rigid part & Black Soft-grip
      • 72 shore (Medium) Black rigid part & Grey Soft-grip 🥇 - The Duo 72 Acts more like an 82 when compared to the Rycote Single Lyress 82.

      Diameter Support: 19/34mm
Free space needed on the microphone: 61mm

Mic Compatibility: Sennheiser MKH 416 to a Deity S-Mic 2s and Rode VideoMic Pro NTG

Our Notes: Even a Duo 72 paired with a Deity S-Mic 2s and a Bublebee industries spacer bubble will still sag with the 30-degree option. Our Anti-O-Sag Lyre rubber rings will remove all sagging, or alternatively, use the to reduce the sag further, or -15°, which removes all sagging.

      Details
Duos are used in many cases for mics with added, slip-on wind protection (e.g. Super-Softie®) or bulbous heads: basically any design that is 'front heavy' and needs extra stability. They can also be used for heavier mics in much the same way as the 82-Shore Single Lyres, where the user needs to be sure of extra support.

      Rycote Single Lyres

      Shore Strength

      • 62 shore (Soft) Black rigid part & Black Soft-grip
      • 72 shore (Medium) Black rigid part & Grey Soft-grip
      • 82 shore (Stiff) Light Grey rigid part & Black Soft-grip 🥇

Diameter Support: 19/25mmMic Compatibility: Sennheiser MKH 416 to a Deity S-Mic 2s and Rode VideoMic Pro NTG

      Rycote Nano Shield Lyres

      Shore Strength

      • 55 shore (Very Soft) Red Soft-grip
      • 62 shore (Soft) Blue Soft-grip
      • 68 shore (Medium) Green Soft-grip
      • 72 shore (Stiff) Black Soft-grip 🥇

      Diameter Support: 19/21mm and 22/25mm

Our Notes: We highly recommend Shore Strength 72 for almost all setups with our FX-Mount. If you have any kind of wind jammer, we recommend pairing your mic with a tougher Shore Strength to reduce Sag.

From our testing, the Nano 22/25mm Shore 72 held up great with a Deity S-Mic2s with a Bubblebee Industries spacer bubble.

      Details
Rycote Nanos are the lowest profile options. Similar to single lyres, only an even lower slim profile. The material, thickness, center of gravity, and mechanical properties have been engineered to provide a more compliant handling response.

      Radius Brand

      Radius Windshields

      RAD-1 / RAD-2

      Shore Strength

      • RAD-2 (62D/Soft) Light Blue or Dark Grey
      • RAD-2 (72D/Standard) Black
      • RAD-2 (82D/Stiff) Dark Blue 🥇

      Diameter Support: 19/25m, 19/20mm, along with 8mm, 12.5mm.
Mic Compatibility: Sennheiser MKH416, Sennheiser MKH8060, Sennheiser MKE600, Schoeps CMIT 5, Schoeps SuperCMIT, Schoeps MiniCMIT, Sanken CS-3, Rode NTG-3, DPA 2017, DPA 4017 and other shotgun microphones.
Our Notes: Recommend using the Extra Firm kit for any lightly heavy wind jammers.

      RAD-1 vs RAD-2
The RAD-2 hoops are slightly thicker than RAD-1 hoops and have an extra 3mm of bracing on top to hold the extra weight of front-heavy microphones.

      Shore Strength and Angle?

Rycote and Radius Lyres/RADs are made to be used flat/horizontal. Our 30° and 0° go against this, so we almost have our own Work in Progress compatibility chart.

      Does Shore Strength Matter?

Yes, and in theory, lower shore strengths offer better isolation, so the lighter you can go, the better. But in practice, especially for on-camera use, the difference is minimal enough that you don't need to worry about leaving performance on the table.

The heavier/longer your mic is, and the intended windshield determines your shore strength you may need.

Given that our mounts are angled, except for the TBC -15° flat/horizontal setup, the higher shore strength is a safer option for almost all mics.
